Chinese New Year in Singapore

Herro,

Just a quick update on my Chinese New Year experience!

I had two days off for Chinese New Year. Chinese New Year Eve was on Sunday and I went to a family friend's for dinner. This family friend is from China and he used to work with my father at the same company. All the guests were his wife's family (she is Singaporean). Yes, it was slightly awkward.

And yes, there are only three people looking at the camera.

This is the inside of an MRT over the Chinese New Year. This photo is living proof of the first time I have ever gotten a seat on the MRT since I have been here.

On Monday I went to Little India for lunch with an NUS friend of mine, Nisha. Nisha is Indian Singaporean and her family originally emigrated from Kerala, India. We went to this fairly upscale restaurant (it was still cheap though and we had A LOT of food) and it of course was delicious. I have to say Tambers has nothing on this place. It is of course very appropriate to go to Little India during Chinese New Year. Its like the only neighborhood that is open!

The Singaporean government designated this area as "Little India" in the 1960s and it has always been a fun and fascinating neighborhood. A must go to area of Little India is "Mustafa Street". You can get everything on Mustafa Street, and I mean everything. It is open 24/7 and prices are very affordable too.

I found this shop to be astounding. This is just an entire wall solely devoted to showcasing bangles and bracelets. These are the only items this store sells. Spiffy, yeah?

Sorry I have no photos after this. My camera ran out of battery. I apologize and you will soon get over this.

After we hung out in the bangles shop we headed down to Mustafa Street to look around. Nisha and I then had some Thai cocount and we stood on the roadside drinking it. Quite the experience. I almost got hit by a motorcycle driver when I did this endeavor.

On Tuesday night I then went to Eva's, house, another NUS friend of mine. We drank Heinkken beer and played mahjong all night with her friends as well. It was a lot of fun! I usually only play mahjong with my family (my grandmother is this very sweet, little 80 year old woman, but her mahjong plays will physically kill you) so playing with people my own age was a nice change and a complete blast! We played a version of mahjong which I have never played before, but I could not use that as an excuse to get any sympathy.

And of course before I end this post I have to say: 新年快乐!(Happy Chinese New Year)!
